SILICON VALLEY – More than 1,000 janitors are now entering the second week of a strike that is affecting high-tech corporate giants such as Cisco Systems, Yahoo, Oracle, Intel as well as Stanford University, UC Berkeley and commercial real estate throughout the Silicon Valley and the Bay Area.
Cisco CEO Chambers and McCain Striking janitors unveiled a new paid advertisement today that connects Cisco CEO
John T. Chambers with
Senator John McCain as the presidential hopeful courts the Latino vote. The ad, scheduled to run in
Spanish language newspapers this week, reads, “Senator McCain, courting the Latino vote begins at home. Tell your corporate backers like Cisco CEO John Chambers to ensure that hard-working Latinos earn a decent wage” and features the story of a Latino janitor at Cisco who is on strike.
Cisco CEO John Chambers recently hosted a fundraiser for Senator McCain, charging $25,000 for a VIP ticket – more than a janitor at Cisco earns in an entire year.
Janitors to Demonstrate at McCain’s Appearances Among Latino Voters Striking janitors will continue to raise questions about McCain and his corporate supporters’ position on good jobs for Latino workers at upcoming events where McCain is scheduled to court the Latino vote, including the annual
Council of La Raza’s convention in San Diego in July.
